全世界親愛的朋友們:

TodaywecelebrateaspecialNewYearwithamomentousnumber:theYearTwoThousand.

今天,我們慶祝一個(gè)特殊的新年,它的年號(hào)不同凡響,是2000年。

AswemoveintoanewMillennium,manyofushavemuchtobethankfulfor.Mostoftheworldisatpeace.Mostofusarebettereducatedthanourparentsorgrandparents,andcanexpecttolivelongerlives,withgreaterfreedomandawiderrangeofchoices.

走進(jìn)新千年之際,有許多事是我們?cè)S多人都應(yīng)該感恩的。世界大部分地區(qū)平安無事。我們大多數(shù)人比自己的父母和祖父母受的教育多,預(yù)期壽命長(zhǎng),享有更大的自由和更廣泛的選擇。

Anewcenturybringsnewhope,butcanalsobringnewdangers-oroldonesinanewandalarmingform.

新世紀(jì)帶來新的希望,但也可能帶來新的危險(xiǎn),或者是老危險(xiǎn)換上了可怕的新形式。

Someofusfearseeingourjobsandourwayoflifedestroyedbyeconomicchange.Othersfearthespreadofbigotry,violenceordisease.Othersstillaremoreworriedthathumanactivitiesmayberuiningtheglobalenvironmentonwhichourlifedepends.

有些人擔(dān)心,經(jīng)濟(jì)變化會(huì)毀掉我們的就業(yè)機(jī)會(huì)和生活方式。又有些人擔(dān)心偏見、暴力或疾病會(huì)蔓延。還有一些人擔(dān)心,人類活動(dòng)可能毀掉生命賴以存在的全球環(huán)境。

Nooneknowsforsurehowseriouseachofthesedangerswillbe.Butonethingtheyhaveincommon:theydonotrespectstatefrontiers.

誰也不能確實(shí)知道,這每一種危險(xiǎn)到底有多么嚴(yán)重。但是我們知道,這些危險(xiǎn)有一個(gè)共同點(diǎn):它們都是不尊重國界的。

Eventhestrongeststate,actingalone,maynotbeabletoprotectitscitizensagainstthem.

即便是最強(qiáng)大的國家,如果單獨(dú)行動(dòng),或許也無法保護(hù)其公民免受這些危險(xiǎn)之害。

Morethaneverbeforeinhumanhistory,weallshareacommondestiny.Wecanmasteritonlyifwefaceittogether.

在人類歷史上,我們從未像現(xiàn)在這樣休戚與共。只有共同面對(duì),我們才能掌握自己的命運(yùn)。

通過聯(lián)合國,我們共同努力戰(zhàn)勝艾滋病和其他流行病,控制氣候變化,讓每個(gè)人都能享受到潔凈的空氣和飲水。

ThroughtheUnitedNations,weareworkingtogethertoensurethattheglobalmarketbenefitsallofus,freeingthepoortoliftthemselvesoutofpoverty.

通過聯(lián)合國,我們共同努力確保全球市場(chǎng)讓人人獲益,使窮人擺脫貧困。

ThroughtheUnitedNations,weareworkingtogethertomakehumanrightsarealityforeveryone–togiveallhumanbeingsrealchoicesinlife,andarealsayindecisionsthataffecttheirlives.

通過聯(lián)合國,我們共同努力讓每個(gè)人都能切實(shí)享受人權(quán),使人人都能真正作出生活的選擇,對(duì)影響其生活的決定獲得真正的發(fā)言權(quán)。

Inalltheseareasandmore,theUnitedNationsisworkingforyou.Butitcandolittlewithoutyou.Afterall,itbelongstoyou–youthepeoplesoftheworld.Andthereforeitcanworkmuchbetterwithyourhelpandyourideas.

在所有這些領(lǐng)域以及其他領(lǐng)域,聯(lián)合國正在為大家工作。要是沒有大家,聯(lián)合國便難以有所作為。畢竟,聯(lián)合國是大家的聯(lián)合國,是全世界人民的聯(lián)合國。所以,有大家的幫助,有大家的智慧,聯(lián)合國才能發(fā)揮更大的作用。
