Goodafternoon.
Asanyoneclosetomeknows,formonthsIhavebeengrapplingwithhowbesttoreconcilemyselftotheAmericanpeople,toacknowledgemyownwrongdoingandstilltomaintainmyfocusontheworkofthepresidency.
Othersarepresentingmydefenseonthefacts,thelawandtheConstitution.NothingIcansaynowcanaddtothat.

Inevershouldhavemisledthecountry,theCongress,myfriendsormyfamily.Quitesimply,Igaveintomyshame.Ihavebeencondemnedbymyaccuserswithharshwords.
Andwhileit''''shardtohearyourselfcalleddeceitfulandmanipulative,IrememberBenFranklin''''sadmonitionthatourcriticsareourfriends,fortheydoshowusourfaults.
MerewordscannotfullyexpresstheprofoundremorseIfeelforwhatourcountryisgoingthroughandforwhatmembersofbothpartiesinCongressarenowforcedtodealwith.ThesepastmonthshavebeenatorturousprocessofcomingtotermswithwhatIdid.Iunderstandthataccountabilitydemandsconsequences,andI''''mpreparedtoacceptthem.
PainfulasthecondemnationoftheCongresswouldbe,itwouldpaleincomparisontotheconsequencesofthepainIhavecausedmyfamily.Thereisnogreateragony.

ImustalsobeatpeacewiththefactthatthepublicconsequencesofmyactionsareinthehandsoftheAmericanpeopleandtheirrepresentativesintheCongress.
Shouldtheydeterminethatmyerrorsofwordanddeedrequiretheirrebukeandcensure,Iamreadytoacceptthat.
Meanwhile,IwillcontinuetodoallIcantoreclaimthetrustoftheAmericanpeopleandtoservethemwell.
Wemustallreturntothework,thevitalwork,ofstrengtheningournationforthenewcentury.Ourcountryhaswonderfulopportunitiesanddauntingchallengesahead.IintendtoseizethoseopportunitiesandmeetthosechallengeswithalltheenergyandabilityandstrengthGodhasgivenme.
